...Global Language; Golden Opportunities...! So, let's speak English!
.................................................................................................................. “Language is the dress of thought.” - Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) ..................................................................................................................
The primary objective of the English Education Department at Universitas Pelita Harapan is to develop excellent communication skills of a scholarly order in English. This situational approach to English is necessary to meet the demands of the current and global societies and has accordingly distinguished our department from those of other universities.
The department is introduced in response to the demands in Indonesia and in other parts of the world for specialists in the teaching, language, and literary domains of English studies. Apart from that, our graduates may also compete in other areas where English is used as a medium of communication.
As a result, the English Education Department offers four concentrations of elective courses to meet the students’ needs:
1. "English Language Teaching" Electives
In line with the current English Language Teaching (ELT) emphasis world-wide, these electives provide a variety of compulsory practically-oriented language teaching courses intended to prepare the students for effective language teaching in various situational contexts.
2. "English Linguistics" Electives
The objective of these electives is to prepare our students to have a detailed knowledge of the English language systems in general and of the structure and functions of English in particular by discussing the nature of human communications, the principles of language acquisition, and the relationship between language and society. The subjects offered prepare the students to be sound language specialists.
3. "English Literature" Electives
These electives seek to train high-level manpower in the appreciations, criticisms, creations, and teaching of the English literature and other world literatures through the medium of English. It is also intended to provide training in the scholarly appreciations and elucidations of multiculturalism in literature, much needed in Indonesia’s and the world’s increasing multicultural societies.
4. "English for Specific Purposes (ESP)" Electives
These electives prepare the students to enter the international business worlds in which English plays a significant role. These electives include: English for Business, English for Broadcasting, English for International Relations, English for Tourism Industry, English for Advertising, and English for Public Relations.
Graduates
Our graduates have met the challenges prevalent in the workplace. Many of our graduates have embraced different professions where English is used as a means of communication. This is in line with the initial spirit when the curriculum was designed for each concentration. The following is a testimonial by Dorothy Kurniadi of the 2005 ED cohort:

"Teaching English and being a teacher are the biggest challenges in my life. I used to think that they would be very easy like counting 1 2 3. However, teaching is complicated because the most important thing is not to make them able to speak and understand English, but how English and the roles of the teacher can give impacts in their lives.
I am teaching senior school students in a national plus school. Most of them are able to speak and understand English very well. Therefore, they think that English is a "side-dish" lesson. Luckily, the lectures at the English Education Department taught me how to teach English in interesting ways. All the lectures that I learned have helped me a lot in the teaching-learning activities, especially in understanding, intervening and coping with misbehaviors. Besides, they also taught me how to find solutions when the students encounter their problems in learning English and/or in their lives.
Therefore, these challenges have moved my soul to learn more to become a better educator. " < read more testimonials>
Teaching staff
The lecturers involved in the four concentrations hold Master's and Doctoral degrees and will present the study materials entirely in English using a variety of teaching techniques, methods and approaches through the use of role-plays, case-studies and simulations. presented both in the F2F and online modes. The lecturers, including the international lecturers and guest lecturers from overseas, are experts in their respective fields and are committed to helping and guiding our students in their learning journeys. < read more>
